Apr 14, 2025    Rhett Barbour

Yesterday Jesus entered Jerusalem to praises from the Jewish people, now he's stirring things up. Professor Rhett walks us through the events of the Monday before Jesus' death.

Transcript:

Each night of this Holy Week, Jesus retreats from the bustling city and heads back across the Mount of Olives to stay with his friends in Bethany.

Then, on Monday morning, he walks back to Jerusalem—and it’s quite the day.

On the way, he curses a fig tree, using it to teach his disciples about faith. He tells them that with faith, they wouldn’t just wither a fig tree—they could throw the entire Mount of Olives into the sea.

(By the way, the sea isn’t exactly close to Jerusalem.)

Later that day, Jesus enters the temple—and what he sees disgusts him.

Vendors have turned His Father’s house into a marketplace.

So He flips the tables.

I imagine it like City Flea in Washington Park, but Jesus goes full rage mode on the misuse of His Father’s house. This place wasn’t intended for this.

This was personal to Him.

He loved this place.

Remember when he was 12 years old, and he told his parents they should have known He’d be in His Father’s house?

That was this temple.

A place for God’s presence—not for thieves.
